Character & Canon: Polka & Eternal Sonata

Personality:
Polka is presented as a sweet, loving, selfless, and yet very lonely young lady. She is also presented as a very strong young lady, as she is well aware that she is dying of a fatal illness, and yet, she still manages to keep going on with everyday life, and even eventually goes so far to make the decision on her own to leave her little village and venture out into the world to try and do something good with the remainder of the time she had left to live. While she continues to maintain a sweet, loving, selfless presence throughout the duration of the game, she also grows in other ways, as events throughout her story shape the person she is by the end of everything.

Despite this very brave decision, however, Polka had only been to two places beforehand; Tenuto, her home village, and Ritardando, a neighboring City where she had gone frequently to sell Floral Powder. As such, she is very naive about the world, and doesn't know a lot about it until she leaves.

Before going on her journey, Polka was a very lonely little girl. Due to her illness, nobody wished to be close to her, for fear of it being contagious. While it had been proven untrue, the general consensus among everybody was that it was, and that being close to somebody who had that very fatal illness would result in that person contaminating everybody else. Polka even told her mother at one point that she didn't mind that she was dying, but that she didn't like being unable to make any friends as a result of her impending death. Thankfully, this began to change as she started out on her journey; it began with meeting Frederic, an odd sort of fellow who claimed that the world Polka knew as her own was all in his dream.

Which, of course, leads me to my next point regarding Polka: She's overall very accepting of other people and their flaws, recognizing them as a part of what makes people themselves. Despite Frederic saying this, and Polka having a little fun poking at him and asking him to prove that he knew everything about the world, even going so far as to ask him what she was thinking. Even though she admits later that she doesn't necessarily believe that the world is Frederic's dream, she also openly admits that she believes it's a beautiful way to look at the world, and thereby implies that she thinks of Frederic as someone very special in her life (her first friend). She even goes so far as to emphasize that Frederic is a person, and has a name, even to someone she eventually falls in love with, who, at the time, was referring to Frederic in a demeaning manner.

That said, Polka loves and cherishes all of the friends she has, recognizing that they are people who love and cherish her as well, impending doom and all. Whenever her self-confidence tanks (which happens at times!), they're always right there to pick her up and make sure she keeps going. She's thankful for this, and she wants to do whatever she can to make certain the wonderful people she calls her friends, and the person she loves more than anyone else, are safe from anything; even the destruction of the world itself.

Yes, it's true. Polka is willing to sacrifice her own life in order to revitalize the world, and she continues to confirm and reaffirm herself throughout her journey that, should things get bad, she will have to do it. And she does. Thankfully, Frederic's presence in the world was what made it the world was able to be revitalized without the need for her to commit suicide, but the fact still remains that she was - and to some extent probably still is - willing to do such a thing for the sake of the world she loves.
